Today, at a celebration for the official designation of Ship Harbour Long Lake Wilderness Area under the Wilderness Areas Protection Act, N.S. Minister of Environment Sterling Belliveau made two major announcements:
- The province "intends to consult widely to evaluate options to establish a large, wilderness area within Crown lands in and near Chignecto Game Sanctuary in Cumberland County".
- The Five Bridge Lakes Wilderness Area is now a candidate for protection under Nova Scotia's Wildnerness Protection Act.

The Five Bridge Lakes Wilderness Area comprises over 8000 ha on the Chebucto Penisnua between highways 103 and 333. It includes extensive barrens, several watersheds with many lakes, wetlands, and a large forested area with old growth red spruce and old growth oak stands,
