Talks (Meetings)

Our talks are given by both experts and interested amateurs – one every month except during the summer. They provide an opportunity to learn what local scientists, volunteers, and HFN members are up to. Regular meetings with talks are held on the first Thursday of every month except July and August at 7:30 PM in the auditorium of the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History, 1747 Summer Street, Halifax. Meetings are open to the public. Use the entrance next to the parking lot. There is a charge for parking at the Museum; usually, two hours will be adequate. (The Museum proper is closed until sometime in Januray of February of 2010 for renovations, however the auditorium will remain open.)

Thursday, Sept. 2 – Forest Regeneration
Richard Beazley and Dave Patriquin will photographically illustrate the recovery of vegetation after the Spring, 2009 Spryfield fire, discussing the related ecology and some implications for fire management. 7:30 p.m. NSMNH

Thursday, Oct. 7 – Herpetofauna & Urbanisation
Join Dr. Ron Russell an associate professor of biology at SMU, for a discussion on the research into the effect of urbanisation on the reptiles and amphibians of Nova Scotia. He’ll discuss such things as direct mortality from vehicles, effects of noise pollution on reproduction, habitat fragmentation, and de-icing chemical effects on amphibian distribution and community structure.
