Halifax Tree Identification – 26 April 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are two photos taken by HFN Member Paul Philp<\/strong> during this walk led by Professor Emeritus Peter Duinker<\/strong>.  Paul notes that the second photo is of a twig from one of the first trees visited on the walk and is what he likes to call the ET tree (remember the ET movie).  “The leaf scars in the photo look like ET.  I sometimes find leaf scars are very useful for ID.  According to the book ‘Trees in Canada’ by John Farrar, black walnut scars are deeply notched and hairless on the upper edge, which also is an indicator of our first tree being a black walnut.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

YNC Swamp Milkweed day<\/strong>
Pictured below are the YNC group, Learning about Swamp Milkweed and it’s critical value to Monarch Butterflies<\/em>. During this outing participants made seed bombs with harvested seed to take home with them. They also exuberantly tasted several cultivated and wild plants, Ground Cherries were a big hit. Directed by their leaders and parents they were a joy to watch and listen to. This outing was arranged and carried out in collaboration with the Halifax Field Naturalists Society. Our group consisted of five canoes, two kayaks, twelve paddlers – and one Jack Russell Terrier!<\/strong>

One of the two active Bald Eagle nests we saw.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

\n\nWe were expertly led on this trip by our own HFN member Gareth Harding, and well led we were.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gareth made a great choice as to river route site, good water flow and level, lush vegetation from water level to tree top, and a gravel bar lunch spot that even had a swimming hole in a back eddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several species of bird life were seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I suspect everyone\u2019s highlight was a colony of 30 to 40 Bank Swallow nest tunnels – that brought back a lot of memories of days when they were much more common<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were on the water by about 11:30 and off by 3:30 or so, lunch and swimming included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great day  all around, from the river, the scenery and the company.  It could not have been better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albino Squirrels — Not one, but two!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note from Stephanie Robertson:  “When we arrived at our cottage there were comments floating around about the presence of an albino chipmunk.  We encountered it later on (it was raining so perhaps this fact added to its perception of it being a chipmunk), very skinny  and wet, including its tail.  I had to gently usher it off our dirt road as it didn’t seem to see the car.<\/div>\n\n\n\n

However, we later saw it in front of our cottage, going, as all the small rodents there do, for the bird seed. However, once again, this video was captured by our next door neighbour in his front grassy and partially treed area.  Enjoy!  (Both have pink eyes.). “<\/div>\n\n\n\n
