{"id":3119,"date":"2015-09-13T19:40:54","date_gmt":"2015-09-13T22:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/halifaxfieldnaturalists.ca\/hfnWP\/?p=3119"},"modified":"2015-09-13T19:44:40","modified_gmt":"2015-09-13T22:44:40","slug":"update-on-invasive-plant-in-frog-pond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/halifaxfieldnaturalists.ca\/hfnWP\/?p=3119","title":{"rendered":"Update on invasive plant in Frog Pond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/halifaxfieldnaturalists.ca\/posts\/2015\/fanwort\/P1330009Sm.jpg\" alt=\"invasive sp.\" \/> This past December, I had reported finding Fanwort (<em>Cabomba caroliniana<\/em>) at the Frog Pond in the Dingle Park, Halifax.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, I noticed it growing around most of the edge of the pond, but it was hard to see how far it was growing towards the center.<\/p>\n<p>Now, its small white flowers are emerging above the water surface,<br \/>\nmaking it easy to see the extent. In my estimate, 1\/4 to 1\/3 of the<br \/>\nsurface is covered by Fanwort, generally in the shallow or protected areas.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As far as I recall, some of those areas were occupied by Water Lilies in previous years. Water Lilies are a food source of beavers, which<br \/>\nhave been on the pond in the past. Not this year, however. Maybe chance, maybe they don&#8217;t like to swim in a tangle of Fanwort (I would not want to), or some other reason.<\/p>\n<p>I had also speculated about Fanwort in Whimsical Lake, which is upstream from Frog Pond.
