The 2014 Regional Plan directs the creation of the priorities plan to: \u201c<strong>\u2026protect and preserve connectivity between natural areas and open space lands, to enable their integration into sustainable community design, to help define communities, to benefit the Municipality\u2019s economy and the physical health of its people, and to reflect and support the overall purposes of this Plan.<\/strong>\u201d- from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/city-hall\/standing-committees\/180621cped151.pdf\">Item No. 15.1 Community Planning &amp; Economic Development Standing Committee June 21, 2018\u00a0<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Landscape Level Planning to conserve and enhance biodiversity and ecosystems services within the municipality and across its borders is a key element of the plan.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16438\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/city-hall\/standing-committees\/180621cped151.pdf\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16438\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16438\" src=\"http:\/\/nsforestnotes.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Map5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map 5, page 35 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/city-hall\/standing-committees\/180621cped151.pdf\">Halifax Green Network Plan<\/a> (View Plan for the detailed map)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Halifax Green Network Plan acknowledges that specific forestry practices remain under provincial rather than county\/municipality level jurisdiction. Given the <a href=\"http:\/\/nsforestnotes.ca\/2018\/04\/12\/annapolis-co-continues-efforts-to-realize-more-control-over-forestry-practices\/\">well expressed concerns of Annapolis County<\/a>\u00a0, we can hope for some recommendations for changein this regard from the impending report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novascotia.ca\/natr\/forestry\/Forest_Review\/\">Independent Review of Forestry Practices in Nova Scotia<\/a>, e.g., such as those in Ontario where\u00a0\u00a0legislation enabling municipalities to pass<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oufc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/By-law-Information-Package-January-7-2011.pdf\"> Tree Bylaws<\/a> was introduced in 1946.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<br \/>\n*Halifax Municipality, now identified simply as Halifax, comprises the whole of Halifax County, the largest of Nova Scotia&#8217;s 12 counties (5496 km<sup>2<\/sup> out of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>52,939 km<sup>2<\/sup> for the province as a whole) and hosts nearly half of the population of Nova Scotia (403390 in 2016\/921,727 for the province; stats from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_counties_of_Nova_Scotia\">Wikipedia<\/a>).<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ourhrmalliance.ca\/\">Our HRM Alliance<\/a> has given The Plan high marks after a first reading, writing to members:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The moment that many of us have been waiting for since 2014 when the Regional Plan directed staff to create a greenbelt for Halifax has finally arrived! Halifax Regional Municipality introduced the final draft of the Halifax Green Network Plan on June 21st.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re thrilled to see that several of our concerns and priorities for protection of the lands identified in the Green Network Plan have been met. Some highlights of those are:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Adoption of Map 5 into the Regional Plan<br \/>\n&#8211; The database will be publicly available<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Adoption of &#8220;Environmental Protection Zone&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Use GNP to help allow and promote eco-tourism<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Use the Green Network Plan to guide future growth decision-making<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Ensure permanent and protected connectivity between current parks AND continue to pursue purchase of Regional Plan proposed parks<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Final Draft of the The Halifax Green Network Plan, under development for several years,\u00a0 was released on June 21, 2018.
