{"id":4601,"date":"2020-04-01T09:48:49","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T12:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/halifaxfieldnaturalists.ca\/hfnWP\/?p=4601"},"modified":"2020-04-23T18:57:08","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T21:57:08","slug":"conservation-committee-of-hfn-comments-on-high-production-forestry-discussion-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/halifaxfieldnaturalists.ca\/hfnWP\/?p=4601","title":{"rendered":"HFN Conservation Committee comments on High Production Forestry Discussion Paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/ecological-forestry\/high-production-forestry\/docs\/high-production-forestry-%20discussion-paper.pdf\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28671\" src=\"http:\/\/nsforestnotes.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Screen-Shot-2020-02-21-at-1.48.35-PM-234x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Following the recommendations of the Independent Review of Forest Practices in Nova Scotia (the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/forestry\/Forest_Review\/Lahey_FP_Review_Report_ExecSummary.pdf\">Lahey Report<\/a>&#8220;), NS Lands &amp; Forestry is proceeding to set up a Triad system for managing Crown lands.<\/p>\n<p>There are three zones: a <strong>Conservation Zone<\/strong>, consisting of Crown lands currently qualifying as &#8220;protected&#8221;; a <strong>High Production Forestry (HPF) Zone<\/strong> in which there will be intensive production and logging of trees; and an <strong>Ecological Matrix Zone<\/strong> in which &#8220;Ecological Forestry&#8221; is practiced.<\/p>\n<p>Protocols for locating HPF sites and management and logging of those sites are being developed by L&amp;F&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/forestry\/Forest_Review\/docs\/High_Prod._Forestry_2_v4_.pdf\">High Production Forestry Project<\/a>. On Feb. 20th, they released a <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/ecological-forestry\/high-production-forestry\/docs\/high-production-forestry-%20discussion-paper.pdf\">High Production Forestry Phase 1 &#8211; Discussion Paper<\/a> with an invitation for public feedback by Mar 13, later extended, at least for &#8220;stakeholders&#8221;, to Mar 31.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Conservation Committee of HFN submitted this document yesterday (Mar 31, 2020):<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/halifaxfieldnaturalists.ca\/hfnWP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/HFNCommentsOnHPFFMG31Mar2020-.pdf\">Need for Biodiversity Landscape Planning before finalizing HPF and Ecological Matrix components of the Triad, and for caution in selection of HPF sites in acid-stressed watersheds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Protocols for the Ecological Matrix Zone are being developed under L&amp;F&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/forestry\/Forest_Review\/docs\/Forest_Man._Guide_1_v5_.pdf\">Forest Management Guide Project<\/a>. Also relevant are\u00a0 revisions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novascotia.ca\/natr\/library\/forestry\/reports\/old-forest-policy-2012.pdf\">Old Forest Policy<\/a> which\u00a0 are\u00a0 being developed under L&amp;F&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/forestry\/Forest_Review\/docs\/Old_Forest_4_V4_.pdf\">Old Forest Policy Project<\/a>.
