Karen McKendry registers the first Young Naturalists, June 3, 2006
The Colin Stewart Award was established in 2004 to honour a lifetime of contributions by Colin Stewart towards conservation initiatives in Nova Scotia. The Award is given annually to an individual or group for significant conservation efforts in Nova Scotia when appropriate nominations are forthcoming. HFN was especially pleased to give the 2026 award to Karen McKendry at our last meeting at the NSMNH. Karen joined HFN pretty close to the day after she arrived in Nova Scotia in 2005 to begin her graduate studies, and within a year she had led the establishment of The Young Naturalists Club and held its first meeting and field trip… Today Karen is widely recognized and appreciated as a highly knowledgeable, rational and always calm champion of the environment and environmental justice in NS. The YNC has grown from the one chapter in Halifax to multiple chapters across the province, plus a tweens and teens program called the Nature Guardians, based in Dartmouth. And in 2026, Karen continues to nurture Young Naturalists as the leader of that first chapter of the YNC. Congratulations & Thanks Karen M! Read more
