HFN and the Nova Scotia Bird Society, led by HFN/NSBS member Dennis Hippern, will visit all the favourite winter birding sites in and around Halifax Harbour looking for ducks, gulls, and alcids – Hartlen Point, Eastern Passage, Dartmouth Cove, Sullivan’s Pond, Tuft’s Cove, and the Bedford Waterfront.

The Fundy Geological Museum, Ottawa House by the Sea Museum, FORCE Centre and the Town of Parrsboro are hosting a second Rising Sea Level Conference in Parrsboro, NS, on Friday, October 18th and Saturday, October 19th, 2013. (The (first was in 2012.) The 2-day conference includes talks and field trips addressing the effects of sea level rise and increased storm activity and how we can mitigate them. The Nova Scotia Environmental Network released their Environmental Report Card today, citing 27 questions addressed to Nova Scotia Greens, Liberals, NDP, Conservatives, the answers they received and their comments and grades on the same.

Iain Jack, who operates Fernwood Plant Nursery in Hubbards, N.S., will explore via a slide presentation the unique and ancient history of ferns, aspects of fern ecology, ways of growing and using ferns, and the diversity of native ferns. Read more

Bill Betty, a mountain lion advocate, will be giving a presentation on Wednesday, September 18 from 7-9 in the Museum of Natural History auditorium. This talk will cover all aspects of Cougar behavior including reproduction, predation and habituation. He will also discuss the various theories explaining how cougars have rapidly reoccupied the Northeast. The talk is free and open to the public.
